Snippet optimisation

Reshaping the answer near the top of a page so it is the one lifted onto the results page, and choosing the pages where being lifted is worth having.

What snippet optimisation is

Snippet optimisation is the reshaping of a short passage on a page you already have, so that a search engine or an AI assistant can lift it and show it as the answer above the list of links. The work is mostly formatting and sequence: a direct answer of forty to sixty words placed immediately under the heading that asks the question, then the detail underneath it for anyone who reads on.

It is not a rewrite of the page, and it is not a trick. A passage is lifted because it is the clearest available answer, not because it was marked up in a particular way. This service stops a good answer being buried in the fourth paragraph.

It is also the small version of answer restructuring, which rebuilds a whole page around the answer and reorders everything below it. This one works section by section and leaves the rest of the page alone. If the page is wrong from the top down, buy the bigger job.

When you need it

You need it when a page already appears in the results for a question and something else is being quoted above it. That is the clearest case: the page is good enough to be found, and a competitor is collecting the visible answer.

The second case is a page where the answer exists but arrives late. Most business pages open with context: who the company is, why the subject matters, what a category is called. The answer lands on the third screen, and nothing on the third screen gets lifted.

You do not need this on a page nobody finds. A lifted answer is drawn from pages already in contention, so a page with no visibility has nothing to reshape. Start with what your buyers actually type or with a refresh of the page itself. You also do not need it on a page whose subject you cannot answer briefly. Some questions honestly take a thousand words, and squeezing them into a paragraph produces a worse page.

What gets changed

  • The direct answer. Forty to sixty words, complete on its own, placed immediately under the heading that poses the question. It has to make sense read aloud with nothing around it, because that is how it will be used.
  • The question as a heading. The section heading is rewritten to be the question a person types, in their words rather than the trade's.
  • The detail below it. The qualifications, exceptions and reasoning that used to come first, moved underneath where they belong, so the page still satisfies someone who clicks through.
  • Tables and lists where they fit. A comparison stated in prose becomes a table. A sequence of steps becomes a numbered list. These are the shapes lifted most readily, and they are also easier to read, which is the better reason.
  • Units, dates and names made explicit. An answer that says “usually about a week” is weaker than one that says how long, for what, and as of when.

There is an honest caveat and it belongs here rather than in the small print. When your answer is lifted, some people read it and never click. On a page whose job is to bring a reader in and sell to them, that can mean fewer visits in exchange for being the visible answer. So the trade is only worth making where the mention itself is the point: where your business name sits inside the answer, where the question is one a buyer asks early and follows with a harder one, or where an assistant quoting you is how you get into the conversation at all. On a page whose whole value is the click, I will usually tell you to leave it alone.

What you get

The rewritten sections. One editable document per page, showing the old passage and the new one side by side, with the heading, the answer, and the detail beneath it marked.

The question sheet. One row per question the pages are aimed at: the question as typed, which page answers it, what is currently shown above the results for it, and whether the page is a fair candidate.

The recommendation. A short note on the pages where this should not be done, and why, which on most batches is at least one of them.

A worked example

An illustration. A Calgary firm hiring out portable site offices has a page covering delivery and setup that already appears in the results for “how long does it take to set up a site trailer”. A competitor's answer is quoted above the list. The firm's page gives the answer, correctly and in more detail, in its sixth paragraph, under a heading reading “Logistics”.

The section is reshaped. The heading becomes the question. Underneath it sits a fifty-word answer: the usual time on a prepared pad, the usual time when levelling is needed, and the note that a crane lift adds a day. The existing six paragraphs stay almost unchanged below it. Two other sections get the same treatment, one of them turned into a four-row table of trailer sizes against crew numbers. The rental pricing page is left alone on purpose: the firm's sales process depends on that page being opened and read, and a lifted answer would work against it.

How it runs

  1. A half-hour call. Which questions your buyers ask first, which pages already get found, and what a reader is meant to do after reading. No charge.
  2. A fixed price in writing. Priced per page or per batch, agreed before anything starts.
  3. The check. Read-only access to your search data, so the questions each page is already close to are known rather than guessed, and so is what is currently shown above them.
  4. The work. Two to four working days for a single page with three or four sections; a batch of six pages runs over two to three weeks. You check every factual answer before it goes near the site.
  5. Delivery. The rewritten sections, the question sheet and the recommendation, together.

What it costs

Quoted as a fixed price in CAD after the half-hour call, because a page with two candidate sections and a page with nine are different jobs. Batches cost less per page, since the research into what is currently shown for each question overlaps. The pricing page shows the four published ways of working, and the number is fixed in writing before anything starts.

What happens next

Where several sections of one page needed this treatment, the page itself is usually in the wrong order, and answer restructuring does the whole thing properly. Where a question deserves more room than a section, it becomes a page of its own, which is the format assistants quote most often. And an answer only gets quoted if it can be checked, so a factual clarity review adding dates and sources is the common companion purchase. This piece of work is complete on its own, and nothing further is assumed.
